Liu Qiangdong, or Richard Liu as he is better known, was born on 4th March 1973 in Shanghai. He attended the Shanghai American School and studied computer science at the University of Michigan in the United States. His Ph.D from the University of Michigan was on “The Analysis and Design of Parallel Algorithms”. After finishing his Ph.D, he worked for Google before founding JD in 1995 as an online reseller of consumer goods from specialty stores, supermarkets and department stores based in Shanghai.

It has been ranked as the most valuable privately held company in China by Forbes since 2014. The company was founded by Richard Qiangdong Liu in 1995 as an online reseller of consumer goods from specialty stores, supermarkets and department stores based in Shanghai.
