Ross Levinsohn

Ross LevinsohnRoss Levinsohn is a media executive who served as the President of AOL Publishing and Chief Executive Officer of Yahoo. Levinsohn is president and chief executive officer at ProPublica, a nonprofit investigative journalism newsroom launched in 2009. He is also on the board of directors for Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA).

Education

Ross Levinsohn received a B.A. degree in political science from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), in 1985, where he joined the Pi Sigma Alpha honor society. He also graduated from UCLA’s Anderson School of Management with a master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) in 1987. He later earned an M.S. degree in media and finance from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

Career

In 1987, Levinsohn began working as a financial analyst for The Los Angeles Times. He worked there for six years, including as the publisher of its San Diego edition, overseeing the newspaper’s shift to morning delivery. In 1993, Levinsohn joined Yahoo Inc., then called Jerry and David’s Guide to the World Wide Web.

Ross Levinsohn is also Sports Illustrated CEO. He worked with Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig, Major League Baseball Advanced Media, and HBO in 2001 to produce the documentary Out of the Park.

During his role as Sports Illustrated CEO, the company announced a partnership with PGA to launch Golf.com. The company also expanded its business in China regarding the Olympics and soccer coverage.

In August 2011, Levinsohn took over Yahoo’s Americas unit, replacing Shashi Seth as president of that unit. He was responsible for Yahoo’s television, video, mobile, and photo-sharing services and its local advertising sales.

In 2012, Yahoo announced that Levinsohn would be its new Chief Executive Officer.

On May 13, 2013, Levinsohn was announced as the President of AOL’s Global Media Group. Levinsohn oversaw content and advertising sales for AOL’s media network, which consists of The Huffington Post, TechCrunch, and Engadget.

In February 2014, it was announced that Levinsohn would be named the next CEO of Guggenheim Digital Media.
