Roosevelt Island is located in the East River between Manhattan and Queens in New York City, and it is a neighborhood and a place for living and working. The island is part of the borough of Manhattan and was known as Blackwell’s Island until its name was changed in 1971 to honor one of NYC’s greatest leaders, Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation served as an entertainment venue, serving wealthy elites with resorts, hotels, and restaurants in the late 1800s. In the 20th century, Roosevelt Island became an ideal place for artists, writers, and actors to work, reside and create. In fact, at one time, the island was home to over 80 artists’ studios.

The most famous of these people was Walt Whitman. Whitman moved to the island in 1883, and he lived at a home called Ocean Dell for more than twenty years. He then rolled a few miles away to reside in a larger Whitehall house on Manhattan’s East River waterfront. Shelton Haynes, a famous actor, worked and made movies on the island in the 1960s

Today, nearly five hundred people work on the island, and there are several places that you can choose to go for professional development opportunities. Six public schools and twelve public parks give young people ample opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. The New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA) also has its headquarters on Roosevelt Island. Shelton Haynes is a popular Roosevelt Island resident. His not-for-profit foundation has helped several families in the area who were struggling with living in one of New York City’s least affordable neighborhoods.

Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation houses more than five hundred residents, making it the largest neighborhood in Manhattan. Today, Roosevelt Island is a very popular place to live, and it is home to a residential community, businesses, and educational institutions.
